Abstrakt: Carrying out research to foster sustainable land use and to contribute to improved rural livelihoods in mountainous regions of Southeast Asia is a highly complex and challenging undertaking. The mountainous regions are the world's richest source of biodiversity. They are vitally important for the climate world-wide; they are the reservoir of water and energy for billions of people and a rich source of cultural diversity. At the same time, these regions are highly fragile, ecologically and economically disadvantaged and extremely heterogeneous ethnically and culturally. They are placed under increasing pressure by rapidly growing demands on their natural resources and rising political rivalries. Given the importance of the uplands and the enormous pressure they are facing research addressing their sustainability is of utmost importance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
