Surface and bulk properties of yttrium stabilized ZrO2 powders in dispersions.

Abstrakt: The electrophoretic mobility of ZrO2 particles stabilized with 3 mol % of yttria recorded at different pH is known to vary as a function of time. The cause of the shift in the surface charge was investigated since it is known to influence a range of important properties controlling the slip casting of ceramic green bodies. It was found that yttrium and some zirconium ions are leached out from the powder surface both in the acid and the basic range, but that the dissolution of yttrium is particularly pronounced in acidic dispersions. As a result, the pH of the dispersions are buffered to values around 5.5. The buffering effect is found to be effective over a period of a few days. The leached yttrium ions influences the electrophoretic mobility, the particle size, the stability of the dispersions against coagulation and the viscous flow. The results are compared with pH and EM values measured on some other commercial ZrO2 powders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
