The article offers an overview of the Islamic lacquer contained in the Nasser D. Khalili Collection of Islamic Art in London, England. Over 500 penboxes, bookbinding, mirror cases, caskets and boxes comprise the collection. Around half of the objects are dated to the 17th- and 18th-century and come from Iran, India and Turkey. Majority of the pieces are signed by its artists, including Mu'in Musavvir, Muhammad Zaman, Muhammad Ibrahim, Muhammad 'Ali bin Muhammad Zaman, 'Ali Ashraf, Abu Talib and the members of the Najaf and Imami families. Also included in the collection are Russian penboxes reflecting the artistic trends in Iran and an early 19th-century lacquer painted backgammon board attributed to Muhammad Hasan Khan. |
