Abstrakt: This article examines the figurative interpretations of Veronica, the woman who wiped Jesus Christ's exhausted face on His way to Calvary. It details the origin and evolution of the iconography of the Veronica. It is noted that the popularity of the Veronica in Catholic devotion should be seen as deriving from its double status as true portrait and genuine relic at one and the same time. The book "Traité des Superstitions," by Jean-Baptiste Thiers and a statement by artist Andy Warhol are referenced.
