Abstrakt: The article discusses the approaches used for the interpretation of medieval ecclesiastical architecture in Great Britain. The antiquarian approach was formulated by Robert Willis. The art historical approach ranges from detailed studies of individual buildings in their historical context to attempts to judge the character of a period in terms of its artistic output and in terms of the society which produced it. It does restrict itself to a sterile game of stylistic snap in which a pre-conceived framework is used. The archaeological approach is characterized by the move from below-ground excavation to above-ground investigation. Harold Taylor says that he studies Anglo-Saxon churches as the archaeological remains of Angelo-Saxon faith.
