Abstrakt: The article discusses the emergence of musical discourse. It states that the mistake of musicology has been the confusion of representation with signification. Through the development of critical and cultural theories, the syntactical procedures and structural conventions of music has been challenge. It adds that the establishment of sonic discourse is in response to the increasing rift between popular culture and inherited musical institutions. It concludes that if musicology is to come to terms with sound, it should first come to terms with society.
