Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a growing health care problem. The current prevalence of CKD in the adult US population is estimated to be 11% (1), and this prevalence is likely to grow as most of the cases of CKD occur in the setting of diabetes, hypertension (HTN), and aging, all conditions of increasing prevalence in modern societies. As a result, the incidence of adults with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) has also consistently increased (2). CKD and ESRD patients have a significant rate of morbidity and mortality (2), resulting in high utilization of health care resources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
