The article focuses on the Miracle House of Mirrors in Key West, Florida which was created by the late artist Makiki or Geraldo Alfonso. He performed a nightly ritual of lighting a shrine to his deceased mother who is reputedly a voodoo queen. He started by glueing pieces of broken mirror glass onto the interior wood panelling of his mother's bedroom. His art delivers messages such as admonitions to love and fear God, obey and worship authority, and alternately deny or indulge oneself. He committed suicide in 1998. His artistic focus has shifted from the virtues of the Madonna to the transgressions of the whore. |
