The article discusses sculptures of a sect of Jain monks from the pre-Kushan period (second century BCE through first century CE) in Mathura, an ancient city in northern India. The author notes that the monks in these sculptures differ from the monks of the Kushan period. The suggestion is made that they were the Ardhaphalaka sect responsible for the art and architecture of Mathura of the pre-Kushan period. Several of the sculptures depict the monks flying, reflecting their belief in the powers of meditation. |
