The article surveys images of the Hindu deity Vishnu found in Burma, and discusses the various influences that were incorporated into the images over time. The earliest images from the Pyu and the Mon favor the Anantasayna form of Vishnu known as Narayana, while the earliest images from Arakan, Burma, favor the form of Vishnu as Vasudeva. A sixth century image from Wunti-taung, Burma, was influenced by fifth-century Gupta sculpture at Mathura, India. From the Pagan period, an image exhibits 11th century Chola characteristics. The last known Vishnu image in Burma is a recently discovered image of Vishnu and Lakshmi, which demonstrates the persistence of the Vishnu cult at Wethali. |
