The article examines the life and art of abstractionist and outsider artist Janet Sobel. She was a Jewish-immigrant housewife from Brooklyn, New York who started making art in 1937. She developed a drip-painting technique years before painter Jackson Pollock made headlines with his dripped action paintings. A brief biography of Sobel is presented. Sobel's son, Sol recalled his mother's first steps as an artist. It describes her painting, "Through the Glass." Her first-ever solo show was presented at the Puma Gallery in Manhattan in 1944. |
