The article highlights the views of dairy consultant Dave Malcolm on the cost of mastitis to dairy farmers in New Zealand. Malcolm revealed that the cost of mastitis for an average herd ranges from $11,500 to $20,000. He added that the total cost of mastitis to the entire dairy industry is $280 million. He also cited the findings of his study on the effect of drying off cows early to avoid the penalties associated with somatic cell count (SCC). |
