Heart failure is a major and growing public health problem, affecting more than 22 million people worldwide. Despite effective drug therapies, the morbidity and mortality associated with heart failure remain unacceptably high. Increasing numbers of heart-failure patients are receiving device-based therapy, either cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) alone or cardiac resynchronization therapy with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (CRTICD). Over 60,000 patients around the world were supplied with a CRT system in 2006 alone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
