Granular materials differ from ordinary solids and fluids in many respects. One particularly fascinating aspect of granular systems is their ability to reduce their packing fraction under tapping. In this contribution, we review and partly extend recent progress in this area with special emphasis on the nonlinear dynamical modeling of the compaction process. In particular, we also present and discuss a novel minimal model for relaxational granular compaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
