Abstrakt: A chapter from the book "Pioneer America Society Transactions" is presented. It considers grain elevators as indicators of agricultural expansion in the Midwest, such as those in Chicago, Illinois, from the late 1800s to the 1900s. These grain elevators represented the economic changes during the period that included the westward shift of production and expansion of cropland due to the draining of wetland prairies. According to the chapter, the early 20th century was an experimentation era with construction materials like tile, steel, and concrete.
