Asthma is one of the commonest diseases in industrialized countries, and there is convincing evidence to suggest that its prevalence and morbidity are increasing, despite better recognition and increased prescriptions for antiasthma therapy (Burney, 1992). It is somewhat paradoxical that the morbidity and mortality of asthma should be increasing at a time when there is increased understanding of the pathophysiology of asthma and when effective therapies are available. It points to the need for an even better understanding of the underlying mechanisms involved in asthma and elucidation of the mode of action of currently available antiasthma therapies.
