Abstrakt: Dynamical instabilities of a stationary open system are discussed as they apply to highly excited semiconductors. These include the quasi-thermodynamic instabilities responsible for the electron hole drop formation. In this context deviations of the electron hole system from a simple fluid are explored. Special attention is paid to the optical properties and their relation to macroscopic as well as single particle properties of the system. Some recent experiments determining the composition and coexistence within the excited electronic system are critically reviewed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
