Heart disease was thought to be associated with diabetes as early as 1883 when Vegley recommended testing the urine of patients with angina for glucose (1). However, as more diabetic patients survived with the discovery of insulin and improved treatments for renal failure and infection, there was a marked relative increase in morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular disease (CVD). Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States, with much of that mortality as a result of CVD (2). However because these statistics are based on the underlying cause of death, they underestimate the true impact of diabetes on mortality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
