Endothelial dysfunction often marks an early stage in the development atherosclerosis and can be observed in coronary and peripheral arterial beds (1,2). Endothelial dysfunction has been documented in patients with type 2 diabetes (3-5) and also type 1 diabetes particularly those who have microalbuminuria (6). Recent data also showed its existence in individuals at high risk for developing diabetes (7) (e.g., impaired glucose tolerance [IGT], first-degree relatives of patients with type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome) and in women with pervious gestational diabetes (8).
