Abstrakt: A profile of Altiero Spinelli, an Italian journalist, a romantic communist and an opponent of Benito Mussolini's fascism, is presented. As reported, Spinelli who spent ten pre-war years in prison and World War II years in internment, wrote a federalist manifesto during this time. It is also reported that his Treaty of Rome paved the way for the Single European Act of 1986 and, ultimately, the drafting of a European Constitution in 2003.
