Abstrakt: The article features several Japanese women ceramists. According to Nobuko Tsutsumi, featuring her art in a magazine was the best way to get respect, and states that art is not part of the curriculum at any of the regular universities in Japan. Mieko Okuda was trained in fabric design at Seika Junior College in Kyoto, then took up ceramics after marrying a potter and assisting him in the family business. Yaeko Ikeda said that the seniority oriented, hierarchical nature of Japanese society makes it very difficult for women to gain a foothold in academic institutions. Born in Kobe and now living in Kyoto, Kazue Tsukuda came to ceramics through taking classes at the Tekisui Art Museum in Kobe, and then apprenticing to Kiyoko Kohyama for two years.
