Abstrakt: This article discusses the work and lives of several older women ceramic artists from Japan. They include Kimiyo Mishima, Takako Araki and Chika Itoh. Among the work examined are Kyo Tsuji's "Chobachi," Kiyoko Koyama's "Mizusashi" and Sachiko Kawamura's "Wind I." The educational stories of the women reflect the varied ways a person can study ceramics in Japan: some form of apprenticeship at a traditional pottery; at a shikenjo; classes geared for the amateur; or, at a junior college or university ceramics or craft program.
