Automation business is rapidly changed by introduction of technologies and components originating from the IT business. Use of Ethernet and other broadband data transport systems instead of field buses integrates interfaces for remote maintenance, diagnostics, remote configuration and download in tiny field devices of matchbox size. These new opportunities are not widely used in ship-building because of missing infrastructure for devices needing a transparent network connection. The idea is not installation of Ethernet as just another broadband fieldbus, this is widely used for internal communication in IAMCS. The idea is designing open systems having the ability not only to transport predefined measured values, but also providing access to diagnoses and configuration web sites integrated in field devices. This will also simplify the use of programming tools. Vision: Broadband networks with structural redundancy not designed for proprietary use but for a variety of applications. Existing technologies will be presented and their effect on maritime automation will be discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
