Abstrakt: The article looks at the selection and judging of entries to the 1999 Shinkenchiku Residential Design Competition. The selection and judging of architectural designs for a theater project were headed by renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer. He paid utmost attention to the relationship between solid and empty areas of volumetric compositions. Entries were primarily judged based on their compliance with the wording requirements set by the competition, simplicity, and consistency in terms of the development of project, graphic representation and text content. The first prize winner was Paulo Henrique Paranhos of Brazil. Runner-ups were evenly represented by four countries.
