This article focuses on Palaya Qiatsuq, a carver from Cape Dorset, Nunavut, who exhibited a large soapstone carving at the 2008 Arts Alive symposium in Ottawa, Ontario. Born on May 10, 1965, Qiatsuq was the third son of the renowned Cape Dorset sculptor, printmaker and elder Lukta Qiatsuq. The message that Qiatsuq communicates through his art are often as diverse as his many influences and yet, at their core, they all share a similar frame of reference: Inuit culture and the past way of life.
