Abstrakt: This article focuses on Inuit artist David Ruben Piqtoukene, who delivered a talk at the 2008 Arts Alive symposium in Ottawa, Ontario. An Inuk of the North educated in English in Catholic residential schools, Piqtoukun is the embodiment of a cultural rift. While art can often be a way of communicating in a more universal language, for Piqtoukene, it seems to be more about reconnecting with his heritage, reaffirming his roots and bridging the cultural divide that separates North from South, past from present and conventional from contemporary. The highlights of his talk and background on his childhood and career are included.
