This article looks at the social change that has occurred in Korea in the 20th century as the first of a four-part that is to be published in this journal on 20th century Korea. The author explores three facets of change: phenomenal, structural, and mental. The first of these, phenomenal, consists of large scale changes, such as the introduction of high-rise apartments. Structural changes embody family and social hierarchy shifts, and the mental aspect describes shifts in values and beliefs. |
