Abstrakt: The article discusses the style and design of the Rookwood Pottery Company between 1880 and the 1950s. The author states that Maria Longworth Nichols founded the company in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1880, and that it was soon the leading American producer of art pottery. Early Rookwood work consisted mostly of vases with subtle glaze finishes and landscapes. Later works emphasized vibrant color and design. These stylistic differences reflected the modern art styles of the times, including the influences of Picasso and the Bauhaus movement. Designers employed by Rookwood include William E. Hentschel, Jen Jensen, Lenore Asbury, and Arthur Conant.
