The article reports on a 40% increase in the financial assistance the U.S. Army Emergency Relief (AER) program provides to soldiers and families in need. According to Lieutenant (Lt.) General (Gen.) Robert F. Foley, the 2005 AER gave about $44 million in emergency interest-free loans and grants, and that number has increased to almost $74 million in 2007. Meanwhile, families of active-duty and retired soldiers are also eligible for need-based undergraduate scholarships of up to $2,900 a year. |
