In [7] we considered the pros and cons of some well-known identification numbers (i.e., identification numbers for US Post Office Money Orders, US documents, Airline Tickets, Universal Product Codes or UPCs, and ISBN-10s or International Standard Book Numbers, IBM's and Verhoeff's) and their check digit schemes. Here we introduce two more (i.e., EAN European article number and ISBN-13 identification numbers). Due to the burgeoning growth of published materials, the ISBN-10 scheme can no longer handle codes for the surfeit of possible book numbers. Thus, a code having more positions to cover current and future volumes is required. Furthermore, since a book is usually simply an article for purchase, it is desired that the standard EAN international article number code be used with special prefixes for books and book-like items. This paper organizes available information for classroom presentation and should be understood by high school or college students after they have studied mod arithmetic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
