The article discusses the several different proofs of the irrationality of √2. It is said that the first proof of the irrationality of the number √2 was given by late Pythagoreans and appears in Aristotle's work. It is discussed that the method was an indirect one and is related to geometry. It also showed that the assumption that the ratio c expressed in the smallest positive integers was rational and would lead to a contradiction. Moreover, further analysis of this method as well as the explanation of other proofs proposed by different mathematicians are also being presented. |
