The article argues that the terracotta of the infant Christ in the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore was executed by the excellent but little studied Antwerp sculptor Cornelis van Mildert (1613-1668). Devotions to the Christ Child in Counter Reformation Europe were accompanied and reinforced by a wealth of pictorial representations. The image of the seated Christ Child meditating on the arma Christi originated in Rome in the second part of the 1620s or in the decade in the circle around Francois Duquesnoy and Nicolas Poussin.
