The article discusses the role of the Bat Grid, a comprehensive bat inventory and monitoring program, in developing conservation plans in the Pacific Northwest. It states that the program conduct surveys using a grid-based sampling frame of square sample units that covers the region. It cites that the standardized Bat Grid protocol involves three methods of identifying bats namely, morphology, acoustics and genetics. It mentions that geneticist Jan Zinck developed genetic markers to identify species through the use of wing biopsies or guano. |
