Abstrakt: | This article analyzes the theories of American psychologist Silvia Sara Canetto on the relationship between gender and suicide. Canetto's theory says that out of the total number of suicide attempts, males are more successful than females. She suggests that by attempting and failing to commit suicide females are merely subscribing to their gender attributes while males meet their gender expectations only when they succeed. Canetto argues that this type of scenario becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. The issue of culture and suicide is also discussed. |
