The article features Martin and Osa Johnson, safaring couple from Kansas who pioneered nature filmmaking. Their efforts to capture disappearing cultures and vanishing wildlife sometimes put their lives in danger. Several generations of filmmakers were influenced by the Johnsons. Martin Johnson was borned in Independence, Kansas in 1884. He married Osa before she turned 17. Particular focus is given to their first expedition. Some of their films were "Among the Cannibal Isles of the South Pacific," "Congorilla," and "Borneo." |
