This article discusses the sources for carbon in the upgrading of wastewater treatment plants to provide for biological nutrient removal. The authors suggest that the demand for supplemental carbon sources and volatile fatty acids is growing. They argue that the most common source of external carbon used in the denitrification process is methanol. The source of volatile fatty acids is commonly acetic acid, but it freezes at moderate temperatures. Sucrose solutions are good sources of carbon, but they attract insects and rodents. Other sources include high-fructose corn syrup, agriculturally derived compounds and glycerol. |
