Abstrakt: The objective of this study was to determine the effect of an upgrade in irrigation technology from conventional center-pivot to center-pivot with drop nozzle systems on the High Plains Aquifer. We simulated corn and sorghum production under limited irrigation to examine conditions under which the technology upgrade will increase irrigation efficiency while reducing the consumptive use. Savings in consumptive use are under one inch when well capacity is low, and occur only from reduced droplet evaporation. At moderate well capacities, the technology upgrade is estimated to reduce consumptive use by 5.2 inches in an average weather year. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
