An interview with Steve Otto, director of research and testing of the Royal & Ancient (R&A) Club of Saint Andrews, is presented. He explains that the proposal to tighten groove specifications on iron club faces is due to the decline in the correlation between driving accuracy and success on the tour. R&A found out that the grooves affect the ability of urethane-covered balls to maintain high levels of spin. Otto states that characteristic time is an excellent predictor of Coefficient of Restitution. |
