The article examines the Olmec ritual offering at La Merced, Hidalgotitlán, Veracruz, Mexico. The first and oldest offering contains axes of the smallest dimensions and the most well defined forms. The second axe offerings, located in layer IIId, expand to the east. Changes in the technique of making the axes, the axe forms and dimensions, and the quality of axe material are noteworthy. The greatest concentration of the second offering was found toward the southeast. The third offering is observed in layer IIIb where stone preforms, nodules, and unworked stone predominate. It is concentrated in the southern part of the unit. |
