Abstrakt: The article analyzes the painting, "Roman Bandits," which painted by Swiss-born Charles Gleyre in 1831, Rome, Italy. It is argued that William Hauptman's claim that the left bandit represents Gleyre and that female victim is Louise Vernet is erroneous because the painter would never have thought of having a relationship with the socially elite Vernet. The political, aesthetic and psychological aspects of the painting are analyzed.
