Critical responses to Jean Renart's Roman de la Rose have tended to overlook the ambiguous configurations of desire in the narrative, enacted through the courtship of the hero Guillaume by the Emperor Conrad. This essay argues that the romance's hybridization is innovative in more ways than one; not only is the formal construction of the text bastardized by lyric insertions, but the narrative itself opens up a space in which straight and queer desires interplay to produce a ludic and deeply ironic critique of courtly culture.
