Introductory programming courses are notoriously difficult for many students, a phenomenon that has been discussed extensively in the literature. This paper presents a case study in a computing degree at a New Zealand institute of technology, and investigates to what extent literature findings apply to this particular context. While some of the literature findings are confirmed by this study, additional factors related to the institutional environment have been identified which may influence student success. Building on these findings, the paper concludes with suggestions for improving student success rates in introductory programming. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
