Abstrakt: Research indicates that public support for the use of racial/ethnic profiling to fight crime is low. In contrast, recent research and polling data suggest the public may be supportive of the use of racial/ethnic profiling to fight terrorism. Using a college student sample and survey-based experiments that systematically vary the context and characteristics of the alleged target (i.e. crime/suspected criminal versus terrorism/suspected terrorist) and the nature of police activity (e.g. "stop and question" versus "search bags"), this paper examines the conditions under which students support the use of racial/ethnic profiling. Multivariate analyses examine the factors that influence these attitudes, including race of respondent, salience of crime and terrorism, perceived racial bias in the justice system, and racial stereotyping. The implications of the results are discussed. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
