Abstrakt: The article describes the works of the artist William Dyce. It suggests that his painting "Titian preparing to make his first Essay in Colouring," is not just another subject drawn from the lives of the Old Masters for its pictorial possibilities. It proposes that the painting was chosen as a visual manifesto of Dyce's view on the form that an artist's education should take.
