The article presents an overview of the history of contact lens innovation. The concept of disposable contact lenses was introduced by the Vistakon Division of Johnson & Johnson in 1987. It was highlighted in the market in the form of silicone hydrogel lenses under Acuvue name at Frontier Contact Lens Company. This breakthrough was followed by the development of etafilcon A by Seymour Marco and SeeQuence polymacon lenses by Bausch & Lomb. Background of the contact lens industry is provided. |
