The article reports on the struggle of artists to preserve the Tree Studios, an art studio built by Lambert Tree and wife Anna in 1890s in Chicago, Illinois. Prospective buyer Steven Fifield wants to convert the studio into an hotel and condominium complex. Barton Faist expresses that the studio is a piece of collective past that shape the lives of artists. Together with his fellow artists and tenants, they fight to preserve their community and life with the slogan "Save the Trees." The Commission on Landmarks recommends it for landmark status, however, city council extends the protection to the facade of the building. |
