Abstrakt: Family research is greatly lacking when studying same sex couples. These couples are often not seen to be a family unit and are often excluded from the research. This paper focuses on the division of household labor in same sex couples. Literature is presented from several contradictory studies conducted on same sex couples. The definition of what constitutes a family is given to account for the lack of representation of same sex couples in family research. Social exchange is tested as a theory for explaining how people in same sex relationships divide household tasks and childcare responsibilities. A survey was designed and administered to determine how same sex couples divide household responsibilities. In this study, social exchange theory is modestly supported yet inconsistencies emerged in the final analysis and lead to the conclusion that other factors are determinants in how household labor is divided in same sex couples. Future research could be focused on more qualitative descriptions of same sex households, especially those with children, as a means to more accurately capture how household tasks and childcare responsibilities are divided. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
