Abstrakt: In the sport of karate, injury is largely avoided by observing the basic rule of stopping offensive moves just before actually hitting the opponent, but contusion to the maxillo facial region is very common. Therefore, mouthguards (MGs) must be used in karate. The generic phonation of karate is called KIAI, and if there is obstruction of phonation by an in appropriate mouthguard, there is a significant risk. So, the use of custom-made mouthguards (CMGs) made by dentists is recommended. We made CMGs for all the members of the All Japan Karatedo Federation National Team in 2002, 2003, 2004 and investigated the usage of MGs. The findings suggest that, although slight adjustments are needed, CMGs prepared in the present study could be used as the basic MG in karatedo. Furthermore, the CMGs used this time will contribute to the popularization of karatedo, because the national team members are in the leading position of karatedo. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
