Abstrakt: Scuba divers sometimes suffer from pain and dysfunction in the masticatory muscles and/or temporo-mandibular joints as well as tooth barotraumas. The symptoms collectively comprise the condition called ‘diver's mouth syndrome’. Previous studies reported that the prevalence of temporomondibular disorders (TMD) while diving ranged from 24% to 68%. Previous reports suggested that TMD while diving might be caused by forward posturing of the mandible while holding a commercial mouthpiece, clenching of the mouthpiece, and environmental factors such as cold water. A well—designed custom mouthpiece is therefore recommended for relieving and preventing diver's mouth syndrome. In this report, we fabricated a custom diving mouthpiece using a thermoforming method for a scuba diver (54 years old, Male, Experience with scuba diving : 5 years), who has diver's mouth syndrome. His symptoms remarkably disappeared while diving by wearing the custom mouthpiece, and he did not have any problem with his masticatory muscles or temporomandibular joints. We suggest that divers with symptoms of TMD should seek dental help, possibly in association with the construction of a customized mouthpiece. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
