Abstrakt: The article discusses the history of bloodless cardiac surgery, the hazards of transfusion, the benefits of reducing or eliminating transfusion and strategies to conserve blood. Data on bloodless surgery were collected from patients who refuse blood transfusion for religious purposes, particularly the community of Jehovah's Witnesses. It cites the transmission of viral infections as the main concern about blood transfusion.
